A number of French heads of state are amongst the numerous key figures who have enjoyed Mère Poulard’s cuisine from 1888 to the present day :
Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister of France from 1906 to 1909 and from 1917 to 1920
Prime Minister, Minister of War and hero in the first World War, Georges Clemenceau, also a great friend of Mère Poulard, was amongst the first heads of state to show his affection for the cuisine of the most famous cook on the Mont Saint Michel.
Today, on the star-studded wall of the restaurant which boasts 4000 dedications, you can read :
« Thanks to Mère Poulard’s omelettes, he has lived to the age of 81 and hopes to continue» handwritten by the « Tiger’s » grandnephew on 20 July 1922. And as history has shown, he lived to the grand old age of 88 !
François Mitterrand, President of the Republic of France from 1981 to 1995
On 30 November 1988, François Mitterrand had lunch at the Auberge de La Mère Poulard with Margaret Thatcher to discuss world problems in a more relaxed atmopshere than an international summit meeting…or, how to combine business with pleasure !
On the menu that day : « perestroika and European cuisine » whilst enjoying the famous soufflé omelette cooked over a wood fire. This business lunch was followed by a tour of the Abbey.
Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic of France from 2007 to 2012
On 15 January 2007, the day after his investiture conference, Nicolas Sarkozy chose The Mont Saint Michel for his first official visit during his campaign for the presidential elections. An incredibly symbolic, famous, extraordinary place which, according to the official UMP candidate, is proof that France has not had its final word and that France is a country like no other.
After answering questions from the numerous journalists who followed the then Home Secretary, Nicolas Sarkozy enjoyed a quiet meal at La Mère Poulard restaurant, away from the hustle and bustle of the streets on the Mount.
François Hollande, President of the Republic of France from 2012 to 2017
On Tuesday 21 October 2014, François Hollande visited the « Salon international de l’alimentation (SIAL) » (international food show), where he met with professionals from the food industry including La Mère Poulard’s representatives who were there to present their new biscuits.
During the visit, Mr Hollande showed a keen interest for the French food processing industry for which La Mère Poulard is ambassador abroad.
